👋🏻
Hello!
I’m Adam, the Wimbledon Park Tutor.
I specialise in:
✅ Supporting children who are working below the expected standard to catch up
✅ Guiding students through secondary school entrance exams
🎓 My students have been awarded places at prestigious schools such as Guildford High School, Tormead, and King’s College.
This is the story of my journey into the world of teaching & tutoring.
How I became a teacher
My journey into the world of teaching started, somewhat by accident, after I earned a first-class degree in English from the University of Sussex in 2015.
On graduating, I was convinced I wanted to be an editor at one of the world's big publishing houses, so I started working for an independent publisher in Brighton.
During this time, I lived close to my uncle and spent a lot of time around his house, where I discovered I had a knack for helping my cousins with their homework.
Strangely, I rather enjoyed it.
So, I changed tack!
I ditched publishing;
became a teaching assistant for a year (to see whether teaching was for me... it was!); and
obtained a PGCE from the University of East Anglia.
Since then, I’ve spent the last six years in the vibrant classrooms of an inner-city London primary school, where I’ve had the privilege of shaping young minds and fostering their love for learning.
And yes, I'm still teaching there now!
How I became a tutor
Like teaching, my journey into tutoring also started somewhat accidentally.
My sister knew a family who were looking for help with their two daughters who were in Year 1 and Year 3 at the time.
One needed specialist support with reading and maths, the other needed help with exam preparation.
I agreed to help and haven't looked back since!
I enjoy how tutoring allows for me to help children one-to-one in a way classroom teaching doesn't.
I get to tailor lessons for each child's unique needs and help them learn at rocketship speeds.
Fast forward nearly three years, and the daughter who needed specialist reading and maths support is now devouring books independently and can nearly recall all her times tables, and the daughter who needed help with exam preparation is about to take the 11+, confident that she will succeed.
I have, of course, helped other children during this time, but I'm particularly fond of working with families over long periods to really empower children and help them to thrive.
What I do when I'm not teaching
When I'm not teaching, I'm likely...
in the gym
making music (I play a range of instruments)
listening to some highfalutin, philosophically-minded podcast, or
sticking my nose into a meaty book.
What to do if you want me to tutor your child
